When Is a Good Time to Build an Authority Website?

What exactly is an authority website, when should you create one, and how do you go about doing so? What's driving people to create one in the first place, and what are the special skills you must acquire before you do it?

Many people have slightly different views about what an authority site is, possibly because they've heard different descriptions from other bloggers and internet marketers in the course of their business.

But, what exactly is an authority website, when should you create one, and how do you go about doing so? What's driving people to create one in the first place, and what are the special skills you must acquire before you do it?

I’m going to address all of these questions below, but let’s start with the basic.

What's an Authority Website?

There's probably never been an official description as to the definition of an authority website, but I think the majority of people would agree that one exhibits certain factors like trust, quality content and relevance. In other words, it is a site that is popular with a lot of people, and people are more than willing to refer people to it or link to it freely. Think Wikipedia if you will.

In my opinion, a website that has been given an "authority” tag by people is a lot more than just having high quality content and a nice website design. It's more like taking your website to another level of quality and giving your readers a new kind of experience not found in normal websites. The site should be more interactive or provide people with more enhanced or personalized services. It should "wow" and impress people on their first visit.

Should You Upgrade an Existing Site or Build a New Site?

It's really up to the individual; although, there are some factors to consider that may help you with your decision. An existing site has the obvious advantages of existing traffic and an aged domain, while a new domain would start completely from the ground up. Many people prefer starting a fresh, new site because it can sometimes take too much hassle modifying an existing site and its navigation links, so you should consider the amount of work involved.

Another aspect to consider is if you have the technical knowledge to make such changes without adversely affecting the on-site SEO for your home page and other web pages. This is important as major changes can have a serious impact on site structure, which can ultimately affect SEO and where the site will end up in search results.

What to Change on a Converted Niche Site?

If you've decided to convert one of your niche sites into an authority site like most marketers do, you may want to remove most affiliate links or Adsense ads that you may have on your site. This helps to bring out the professional appeal of your intended new site. Does this change make your authority site less profitable? No, it's a known fact that an authority website should become more profitable for you, as long as you do all the right things. It's also one of the incentives that will drive people to do so, too. By increasing the content pages over time, these Adsense and affiliate links will look more natural with increased opportunities for clicks to take place. With a bigger site, it also allows you to evaluate your present monetization methods with the potential of making more income.

When Should You Create an Authority Site?

If you’re a complete beginner or someone relatively new in your online business venture, this path is probably not for you. At least, not yet anyway. You should have some experience of creating and managing a few sites and understanding some of the intricacies of making money online in your niche. You would also need to understand how to structure your website, both for the search engines as well as visitors to your site.

A good gauge to know when a good time to start launching an authority site is when some of your niche sites begin to earn you a regular income. That's the best time to scale it up and take it to the next level of success and turn one or a few of them into a big authority site that you know will generate more income for you.
