On Choosing Your SEO Projects

SEO Projects
One thing I gained when I learned to choose projects was the feeling of inner happiness. I felt secure and comfortable, and I knew this was the key to my second experience of success.

A very common mistake of amateur SEO companies is accepting clients and projects without thinking if this can help their company in the future terms. However, even companies that have been in the business for years and decades have been experiencing difficulties in avoiding this common consequence. Like me, there was a point when my employees found it hard to cope with our monthly set of campaigns. It was my fault because I accepted clients without even screening them and I thought that having a stable campaign would relieve me from financial downfalls. I have always set aside happiness in exchange for financial stability.

Then I learned to choose my projects.

Choosing projects was a very hard task for me then. I experienced client pullouts and got a negative reputation from the companies I decided to let go. Some of my team members even resigned, putting my company in a very critical situation.

One thing I gained when I learned to choose projects was the feeling of inner happiness. I felt secure and comfortable, and I knew this was the key to my second experience of success.

Projects I can learn from

New things always fascinate me, especially if I see these as beneficial to myself and to my company. I have been doing SEO for companies that are into innovation and pioneering, such as the green coffee industry, healthy candy for kids, and shoe manufacturers for several non-profit organizations. I found these companies new and innovative, and that’s why I agree to handle their SEO campaigns.

Improvement is what I like with handling obscure yet innovative companies. Handling new things means learning, and learning means improvement on my part. From these companies, I get the chance to know more people outside my league, making my company bigger and stronger. Moreover, I get to acquire experience and knowledge.

Projects that involve my interests, hobbies, and passion

What I enjoy about these projects is getting to talk with people who have knowledge about my passion and interests. I am a big fan of golf and water polo and I look forward to meeting with country club executives. Another thing I love is when our conversation goes beyond and we end up talking about our sports idols, gear, and upcoming events. This reminds me how fun my work is. I’ve also gained new clients from the sports industry because of my frequent meet-ups with sports enthusiasts and business owners.

Challenging projects that push me and my company to the limits

I love projects that challenge my SEO capabilities. There are projects that push me to make a site gain high rankings in less than 6 months, or give a website a decent link building network while increasing its ROI. SEO is a very uncertain field, and these types of projects pushed me to my limitations and beyond client expectations.

Consider your employees’ beliefs, religious affiliations, and principles

This is the hardest part because knowing all your employees on a very personal basis is feasibly unattainable. Despite this, I make it a point that I don’t make my employees work on projects that may affect their personal views in life. I always consider my team members’ religious and political views. Though it may affect the work process because of the need to reshuffle teams once in a while, I feel at ease if my employees are working in peace as well.

I stopped considering illegal businesses

Companies and individuals dealing in fake products and ill-gotten items from an obscure country were my favorite clients when I was just starting out. These companies are willing to pay big amounts of money just to have their site at the top of search results for their niche, even if I used Black Hat SEO techniques. However, I learned from these previous projects. Today, there’s no room for such clients in my company.

Something You Learn very quickly if you are a freelancer

I do SEO work as a freelancer, mainly in Sri Lanka and this is something I learned pretty quickly. Sometime you think about the money and get as many projects as you can, but then end up with too much of a burden. You are forced to stick to tried and tested methods because no time to experiment and you will hardly learn any new things. Took me a while to realize it but now I'm more picky with what clients I work with.
