Reverse Spinning and Other SEO Olympic Games
Why shouldn’t people involved in SEO get their own Olympics as well? Maybe it wouldn’t involve hammer throwing, pole vaulting or that event where they do a strange hop and jump before throwing themselves into a sand pit but it could be a lot of fun. Here are a few ideas to get us started.
Reverse Spinning
Maybe I am the only person in the world who already takes perverse pleasure in this game but I somehow doubt it. Do you know when you come across an unintelligible article which has obviously not been written by a human and only has SEO purposes in mind? It might be something like, “In this rapid transporting planet the discretion of the bowl of milk pertain to uppermost spoons”. Well, here is the game; work out what on Earth the blooming thing said before a spinner got their hands on it. It sounds really easy but it usually isn’t. In extreme cases – hey, I might call it Extreme Reverse Spinning now – every single word has been replaced by a not entirely appropriate synonym by an underpaid freelancer with only an obsolete dictionary and a bare light bulb for company. In fact, when I see these articles it often strikes me that it is probably more difficult to come up with a lot of archaic synonyms than just to write the whole thing out again from scratch. Anyway, the game would be a straight sprint to the finish line in deciphering an article and making it something which the human mind doesn’t reject as complete tripe. I just tried it out on a dodgy site I found and I did the 100 word dash in 53.56 seconds, so try and beat that to qualify for the next event if you can.
Hunt the Keyword
This is another classic which has to be included in the inaugural SEO Olympics. You enter a site for low cost ties and it says “Cheap ties have been popular with cheap ties wearers ever since the Great Cheap Ties exhibition of 1923 in Calcutta”. That was a starter level one, of course. Other sites and article are a lot more subtle and working out the keywords can be really tough. In fact, some writers seem to take a certain delight in hiding the keywords through tactics such as emphasising or repeating unimportant words.
Work out the Backlink
The last one is my favourite I must confess. You look up an article like “5 Ways to Improve Your Ballroom Dancing Skills”. After reading all about pirouettes, twirls and other techniques which I can’t really be bothered looking up you see that the backlink is a blatant plug for a site selling digital cheese graters or something. Your task is to work out what the backlink is before you reach it. This can be a really tricky event and would be the play off for those who had successfully passed the (Extreme) Reverse Spinning and Hunt the Keyword rounds. Once you get through this fame and fortune probably don’t await but at least you will be a king of kings in the SEO world.
