Starting an Online Store? 4 Things You Must Do First
Retail experience in the traditional marketplace does not always translate to an online business. In order to make the transition, you need to learn how to adapt to the online world. Of course you'll recognize similarities between on and off line ventures – it's the differences that can get you down.
Let's take a closer look at the similarities and the differences so you can get that online store up and running.
1. Start with a solid business plan
As with your offline retail store, your online store must be founded on a strategic business plan. Start with your funding responsibilities. Obviously online businesses do not require renting office or store space, but they do necessitate other expenditures. You'll need a business specific webhosting plan, web design, and software.
You'll need to assess the competition. What can you do to exceed their products and services? Set yourself apart with superior 24/7 customer service, free shipping, discount prices, or bulk pricing.
2. Establish your marketing strategy
First and foremost – target your audience? Who are they? What do they need? How can you satisfy their demands?
Next, how do you reach that target audience? Begin by evaluating the competition and improve on their methods. For example, are they fully utilizing social media such as Twitter or Facebook?
Finally, honestly determine what you can afford for advertising. Pay per view or display ads can bring instant results, but they're costly. Do some research into alternate forms of advertising. The web is full of advertising choices. Find the methods that are the most cost effective for your online business.
3. Benefit from the best technology
Online shoppers are in a hurry. They're also impatient and a bit apprehensive. Your software must be fast, easy to use, and secure.
So what exactly does that mean? Fast means your shopping cart loads quickly. But perhaps equally if not more important is the navigation of your website. Confuse your customers and they won't even make it to your shopping cart. Think back button. If they see security issues, they are just as likely to run.
They're apprehensive? Don't expect your shoppers to just take your word for it that your site is secure. Your online payment process must demonstrate that it is secure and safe, or they won't turn over their credit card data.
4. It's all about patience
Far more so than with traditional offline stores, an online store will not take off overnight. Think about it. Set up a store front and people can see you! It's not that easy online. It could be months before your customers discover you. It's all about having the patience to take the appropriate measures to promote your site so that the traffic does arrive. Include in your overall budget enough capital to keep you above water until you can turn a profit.
