7 Reasons to Take Your Webmaster to Lunch
Webmasters have a lot of responsibilities which can vary greatly depending on the size of the company and the type of website they work with. Some are in charge of everything from design to implementation while others may manage the servers that support the site or regulate things like user access. Most webmasters fix problems as they arise, and prevent future problems from happening.
In short, the webmaster is responsible for keeping things running smoothly on YOUR site so that customers are happy and more likely to buy your product, subscribe to your feed or take whatever actionable step you want them to.
Here are 7 reasons to take your webmaster to lunch:
1. To say thanks
The first and obvious reason would be to say thank you for the hard work they do every day. Let's face it, you might have a vague idea what they do, but you probably have no idea how they do it. Without a capable webmaster things can fall apart very quickly.
2. Get him/her out of the office
Not to stereotype here, but webmasters aren't usually the type of employees that get out a lot. Many spend the majority of their time at work in their office, cubby hole, or signed in remotely while they should be taking a little time off. Webmasters work way more hours than you think they do.
3. Impress the webmaster that you know about Take Your Webmaster to Lunch day
Webmasters are smart people, and impressing them that you are paying attention will go a long way. See if you can't come up with a joke about XHTML or prepare a complaint about people who still use IE 6.
4. A chance to de-stress
Many webmasters eat lunch at their desk or on the run as they work on problems throughout the day. It's a nice treat to sit down and enjoy a meal without any interruptions, just watch out, they will probably be logged in through their smartphone or a tablet under the table, writing lines of script while they make small talk.
5. They work hard, and deserve recognition
Coming in when things break down, even after hours and on weekends isn't anyone's favorite thing. But a webmaster has to keep things running because the internet doesn't have business hours. The more they feel appreciated for this level of dedication, the longer they will be able to keep it up.
6. Bribery
Coax them to get to your project first; whether it's fixing typos, or making changes, a little influence never hurt anyone.
7. Blackmail
If your webmaster has been keeping your project hostage in their task queue, perhaps they are just looking for a little respect. Resolve the situation with a perfectly seasoned rotisserie grilled meats from a Brazilian steakhouse rather than threats.
Spend some time at lunch with your webmaster on July 6th, and thank them for all the hard work they do!
