An Introduction to Dedicated Hosting
If your website needs a lot more than you can get with a regular hosting package, dedicated web hosting is for you. The difference between shared “regular” web hosting and dedicated web hosting is that you will have your own hardware to run your website on. None of the other customers will have an impact on the speed and uptime of your website.
Another advantage to dedicated web hosting is that you will have much more control over the technical aspects of running your website. If you're well equipped to handle the responsibility, it can give you more bang for your buck to have a detailed control panel that gives you the options you need to optimize the backbone of your website.
First, unmanaged hosting is where you use an online control panel to change the settings on your dedicated server so that you can run your website. You will be responsible for backing up the website, installing new software, and updating anything that needs updated.
For those who are less technically inclined or simply too busy to handle server maintenance, there is a service called managed hosting. The staff at the hosting provider will take care of all of the technical aspects of maintaining the server for you, but it will cost more to have them do so. Depending upon the amount of free time you have, it can be much more cost effective to let the provider take care of it for you — especially if you don't know what you're doing. It can be much more detrimental to your website to have a lot of downtime than to pay more each month to make sure that nothing goes wrong.
If you or the person who will be responsible for the dedicated server are unsure if it's within the skills and time you have available, then you should use a managed host. There are exceptions to that rule, but it will be blatantly obvious when you are an exception.
Running unmanaged server
Ciao! I have applied for an account of unmanaged dedicated server and run into troubles. I didn't expect that managing it will be so technical. Now I'm changing hosting provider because my current do not offers managed dedicated server plans. It would be much easier if I had started with managed from the beginning.
