Domain Names Guides and Tutorials

Domain Name

The whole process of registering a domain name, to many, sounds like a mountainous project. Much like registering a business, people try to stay away from it imagining there are dozens of forms to be filled out, countless time, and legal loopholes by the score to leap through. The truth is that the hardest parts of registering a domain name is choosing the actual name, and choosing which domain registrar or hosting company to use.

Keys

In short, having your own domain name could very well mean the difference between the success or failure of your website. It may sound dramatic, but have you ever heard of a famous blogspot.com page or eBay store?

The average price to register your own domain name for one year is 9.99 USD. What’s an extra ten dollars when you can own the ball and the court? That’s the difference between free website and owning your own domain name. If the land lord ticks you off or changes rates suddenly, you can take both your ball and court to one who will appreciate you.

Domain Names

With all of the websites on the Internet, good domain names are becoming a valuable and scarce resource — especially if it's a .com or a .net. There are people who actively seek out profitable domain names and monitor trends so they can buy up the good ones and sell them back to you at a profit. While it isn't common, there have been domain names which have been sold for figures in the millions. Most of the time, these domain names will sell in the hundreds of dollars.

TM Sign

Technically, most names and certain words are supposed to, and usually do, fall outside the protection of trademark laws. First names, common/generic words, and last names are a few examples of this. But, names like Coca-Cola, Ford, and G.I. Joe are protected if used in the same context.

Different Top Level Domains

A TLD, or Top Level Domain, is the name for the affix to the end of your domain name. There are several TLDs, the most common being .com, .net, and .org, and each one has a specific meaning which signifies the type of web site. Also, there are now Top Level Domains for countries, such as .uk, .ca, .ru, and so on. Before domain names were available, the way to access a network or website was to use its Internet Protocol address, which is a set of numbers separated by dots like 192.168.1.1, but it was difficult for a user to remember all of the number-sets.

Whois Search

You may visit a website and wonder who owns the domain name for many reasons. For example, you may want to try to purchase the domain name, or you could simply be curious. Possibly, you suspect the owner information presented on the page is fake, and you would like to cross-reference it with another source. Whatever the reason is, the thing you need to do is a WHOIS search for the domain name.

Privacy Protection

When you register a domain name, whether or not it's a personal or business site, you're asked to provide personal information. You can either publicly register the domain, which is what most people do, or you can privately register it.

Mapping System

The Domain Name System, or DNS, is the “mapping system” of the Internet. It translates names that are easily understood by humans into those that are understood by computers. It also groups the computer addresses in a meaningful and searchable way, regardless of the physical location of the user.

Parking

If you've been searching for a domain name for your website, you're very likely to have run across some parked domain names. A domain name is “parked” when there is no useful content on the page, but the domain name has been bought. Many times, a parked domain will have ads on it, and the person who parked it is willing to sell the domain to someone else for a profit.

Forwarding

Domain name forwarding is used to redirect a user to another website when they type in a domain name. Domain names are used to reference Internet Protocol addresses, which are the actual address of the server you are accessing. When a user types in a domain name, like yahoo.com, they are redirected to the IP address that yahoo.com references. However, sometimes a webmaster may choose to have you redirected a few times until you end up at the main website's URL.
