eCommerce Beginner's Guides

Ecommerce, quite simply, is doing business by buying or selling goods and/or services online. In the last decade the term has been applied to just about every type of online venture. The reality is that money (or something of value) must “exchange hands” for products or services to warrant the term ecommerce.

One the internet there are countless articles, blogs, and blurbs about what not to do when starting an ecommerce website. While almost all of them hold some useful tidbits of information, what about the things you should do and look for in ecommerce? If one was to believe all the “what not to do” tips and suggestions, it’s a wonder any ecommerce sites ever get started in the first place. You have to take some risks to become successful. It’s just a matter of taking fewer when starting.

With that in mind, it’s time to move on.

An online shopping cart is, just like its physical counterpart, a way to place multiple items into a place where you can keep them until you check out. Although different websites have different looks to their shopping carts, fundamentally they’re the same in function. You click on an item, click again to place it in the shopping cart, and then go on shopping or proceed to the check out (payment) process.

Merchant accounts are contracts with an entity which allows you to accept debit/credit payments. On the Internet, these accounts are essential because checks and money orders can be a major strain on a small business to process, and they will delay payment. To find the correct merchant account provider for your website, you should investigate the fees associated with that provider as well as the popularity of the credit lines they carry.

You don't necessarily need an Internet Merchant Account to accept payments over the Internet.

Unfortunately, how to get validation or trust isn’t as widely known as registering a domain name, but it’s a simple as a form and payment. The easiest way is to enable SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption on your website is to buy an SSL Certificate.

The type of SSL certificate which requires the most investigation is the Extended Validation (EV) certificate. It is a special type of X.509 certificate which requires the CA to investigate the requesting party/site thoroughly before issuing it.
