Google SEO Starter Guide Updated

SEO Guide
Google has released an updated version of the SEO Starter Guide that has been around since 2008. While there were some noticeable changes such as the addition of a glossary and SEO for Mobile Phones section, there were also a number of items that remained pretty much the same.

Google recently released its updated SEO Starter Guide. Some of the content is relatively unchanged, while other areas are completely new or have been updated. It was designed to be an all-in-one SEO guide that targets primarily people with little knowledge about SEO, although it also offers some insight into how Google operates, which is valuable for seasoned veterans. Here is a closer look at what it is, what's inside, and what's been updated and added.

What Is It?

In total, there are 6 basic categories of information: Basics, Site Structure, Optimizing Content, Dealing with Crawlers, Mobile Phone Sites, and Promotion/Analysis. When looking at all of the content in these sections, it is important to keep in mind that this is really is a “starters guide”. While it does have a lot of valuable information, a majority of it will not be new to seasoned SEO veterans.

What's Inside?

In total, the SEO Starter Guide is 32 pages and covers a variety of content. Within each sub-section of this guide, Google lays out it's “best practices” along with an explanation of why each of these areas are important to keep in mind when designing a website. That means that for each sub-section, there are two different topics – the explanation/overview of the subcategory and the best practices for each action that is discussed.

What's New?

The big question that most people have about the new guide is what new information can be covered. Google noted that a majority of the new information is from questions and discussions in the Webmasters Blog and Google Forums. Cosmetically, the biggest change is that additional of more infographics to illustrate each point as well as the addition of a glossary. In regards to content, there are small changes in nearly every section, however the most notable change is the addition of of the “SEO for Mobile Phones” section. There is also a list of the free webmaster tools that Google provides and how to best use them for your website.
