Google Releases Open Source Server-Side Optimization Module

Page Speed
The release of the mod_pagespeed module by Google has caused great excitement. But what is this server-side utility and how does it improve webpage load speeds? Discover why mod_pagespeed could be the next big must-have for any website optimization-junkie.

Google has just released a server-side module called mod_pagespeed. This module is designed to work on Apache servers and aims to reduce website loading speeds by optimizing up to 18 different elements.

How Does Mod_Pagespeed Work?

Without going into too much technical detail, mod_pagespeed assists in the optimization of some common server-side factors that influence client-side output. Mod_pagespeed has been engineered to:

  • Minimize of Round-Trip Times
  • Optimize Caching
  • Reduce Payload Sizes

The mod_pagespeed module works by performing many optimization tasks at a server level. This saves a website owner having to spend large amounts of time analyzing individual website components. This multi-faceted server-side utility could potentially save the average website owner valuable time and help to automate website efficiency.

Google Claims Up To 50% Increase in Load Speed

Google itself recommends many optimizations that will increase website page loading speeds and many of these would be difficult to introduce without considerable technical knowledge. It is hoped that the release of the multi-functional mod_pagespeed module will provide many website owners with the necessary tool to implement many of the optimization recommendations suggested by Google.

Google has stated that most of the websites they have tested the mod_pagespeed module on have displayed up to a 50% increase in page loading speeds. If this is correct then this new server-side tool could mean a 2X improvement to average website page speeds.

Website Optimization for Free

The mod_pagespeed module is open source, meaning that no one holds the license and it can be used for free.

The module focuses on important elements such as JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. It promotes optimization in these specific areas by using a set of pre-designed filters that are based on best practice specifications. This results in a faster overall load speed through enhanced efficiency.

Early Stages but Serious Potential

The mod_pagespeed module is still in the early stages and while it is available it is still a new utility. This could mean bugs and many months of tweaks and refinements. Google has openly stated that it intends to add more filters to the module in the near future. Google is also currently working with hosting giant GoDaddy to implement the module into its hosting software.

The mod_pagespeed module may still be in the infant stages but it could soon be a must-use for website owners and hosting providers. But will mass mod_pagespeed implementation make the internet faster for every day users? Only time will tell.
