Plone 4 CMS Release Features Improved Performance
The long awaited release of Plone 4 seems to have been worth the wait. There have been a number of improvements, especially under the hood. It is not only more refined in its architecture, but has also been made much more user friendly. Some of the most noted improvements have been in the areas of speed, ease of use, and scalability. Here is closer look at the highlights of the Plone 4 release.
New Default Theme
One of the immediate noticeable differences is the new Sunburst theme. It was created with 5 specific goals in mind. It wanted to remain neutral, modern, and easy to customize without being boring. It uses a table-less grid based design, simplified CSS, and support for previous versions. The most notable change is that the core of the new design was created specifically for the layout system that is to be the foundation of Plone 5.
Overall Performance
There are significant performance improvements when compared to Plone 3. With Plone 3 as the baseline, Plone 4 is 68% faster for an anonymous view, 53% faster for the logged in view, and the edit screen is 41% faster. Additionally, the median response time is more than 150% faster when there are 15 concurrent users. Plone 4 will also use 20% less RAM than Plone 3.
Additional Under the Hood Improvements
- Ability to create site without default content
- New default editor
- KSS is faster and smaller
- Improved first run experience
- Easy upgrading
- and much, much more.
Plone 4 has definitely stepped up and delivered a much improved product over Plone 3 in every regard. It is even more exciting that they are already discussing further improvements that are planned for Plone 5.
