Bing Releases FAQ Compilation PDF
Bing has finally released a FAQ that is more centralized as well as more detailed. In this updated compilation, they have combined information from the Webmaster Help Center, Webmaster Center forums, and their numerous Webmaster Center Blog Q&A posts. This compilation has been put into PDF form so that webmasters can download it and refer to it at any time.
While the PDF is quite long, it is very comprehensive and extremely well organized. As new content develops over time, Bing has said that the PDF will be regularly updated. If you have any questions that are not addressed in the PDF, Rick DeJarnette, of the Bing Webmaster Center, suggests that you post your questions at their new SEM forum to get your answers. Common questions in the SEM forum will undoubtedly be added to the FAQ PDF when it gets revised and updated.
Here is a quick look at what the new Bing Webmaster Center FAQ PDF covers:
Webmaster Center Tools
This section covers questions related specifically to tools that are available in the Webmaster Center. The questions range from “How does my website perform when people use Bing to search for specific keywords” to “Why does my websites authentication fail”.
IIS SEO Toolkit
This section is still rather limited, although the IIS SEO Toolkit is easy to understand after only a few moments of using it. The most important issue that is raised is that the IIS SEO Toolkit is designed to run as an extension to IIS version 7, so operating systems that are older than Vista may have some problems, most notably Windows XP.
Ranking
This section has a number of questions that get answered, and many of them are extremely SEO related. Most of the discussion focuses on backlinks and link building strategies as well as what Bing looks at as far as on-page SEO is concerned.
Crawling
This section is fairly short and concise. It deals with how to submit your website to Bing, making sure that your robots.txt file is configured properly, and how to ensure that your website gets crawled completely.
After the first four sections, the rest of FAQ is geared a little more towards more technical issues as well as continued focus on the best SEO practices that should be used to get Bing's attention.
Additional Sections Include:
- Robots Exclusion Protocol Directives in Web Page Code
- Robots Exclusion Protocol Directives in Robots.txt files
- Indexing
- Sitemaps and mRSS
- Web Page Coding for SEO
- Malware and Web Spam
- Miscellaneous
- Blog
Even if you don't have any specific questions, the FAQ PDF is an interesting read and a solid refresher course to the basic elements of effective SEO tactics.
