What to Expect from the Wordpress 3.0 Beta 1 Release

Blog
Wordpress 3.0 Beta 1 has officially been released for testing. While a lot of testing still needs to be done, Wordpress 3.0 is poised to be a huge upgrade from the current stable version in both functionality and user interface.

Wordpress 3.0 was recently released for Beta 1 testing. One of the first things that users need to keep in mind is that this is a very early beta release, which means that there are still some issues that still need polishing, but most of that is supposed to be done within a week.

Wordpress has outlined 3 key “Things to Know” that testers need to be aware of:

  • The custom menu system has still not been finished and the Beta 2 layout and functionality will be greatly improved. While it should be still be tested by users, there is no reason to get attached to the look and feel of it.
  • Wordpress and Wordpress MU have finally merged. However, the integration has not been completed, so adding a bunch of new sites will still require some extra leg-work.
  • There are some minor user interface tweaks that will be added, however this may take some time since the main focus has been oriented towards the function-coding.

Wordpress also issued several new features for which they would specifically like feedback about during the Beta 1 phase:

  • A new default theme, known as Twenty Ten, has been added. It includes custom background and header options.
  • The Custom Post Type has been made much more robust. It is been made much easier to add new types, so make sure to test some out and see how it works.
  • Wordpress MU users need to test out the multiple site functionality and make sure that nothing got broke during the process of integrating the two systems.

Anyone who has a test install that they would like to switch over to the Wordpress 3.0 Beta 1 can use the free beta tester plugin to make the transition easier. Additionally, if you plan on testing out Wordpress 3.0, then make sure that you sign up for the wp-testers mailing list. It is the easiest way to discuss bugs that were encountered and other changes that need to be made.
