WordPress Takes Top Honors in Open Source CMS Awards for 2009
It's that time of year again and the results of the 2009 Open Source CMS Awards competition are in. These awards are truly coveted and deserving as members of the development community participate in the selection process. Winning an Open Source CMS Award is truly a seal of approval from professionals in the field.
And the Award Goes to…
For the first time in four years, WordPress snatched the top spot in the Overall Competition from fellow finalists ModX and SilverStripe. Voting was so close that ModX and SilverStripe actually tied for the first runner-up spot, with each winning $2,000 while winner WordPress netted $4,000.
WordPress may have won the Overall, but Drupal stole the spotlight by taking home two awards. They won top honors in the first ever Hall of Fame Award taking home $4,000 while first runner-up Joomla was awarded $2,000. Drupal also got "Best in Show" for Best Open Source PHP CMS category. This category has recently featured a real dog fight between Drupal and Joomla for the number one spot and this year WordPress made the final five in the competition for the first time ever. And in a surprising finish, Drupal barely beat out WordPress while Joomla slipped to second runner-up. Does this mean WordPress is gaining in popularity? Stay tuned till 2010 to find out.
The 2009 CMS Award for Best Other Open Source went to Plone. Plone won this award last year as well and has finished in the top three since this category was first added to the competition in 2007. Perhaps reflecting the overall quality of developers everywhere, this contest also had a "photo finish" with first and second runners-up dotCMS and mojoPortal finishing neck and neck with Plone.
Finally, the winner of the Most Promising Open Source CMS category was ImpressCMS. But continuing with the narrow margin of victory trend seen in all this year's awards, there was a tie for first runner-up in this category as well. Pixie and Pligg each took home $1,000 for their near-winning efforts. Congratulations to all this year's winners! If you have friends in the development community who are unaware of these prestigious awards, make sure you invite them to join in the competition next year.
