FTP Clients Reviews

WinSCP Logo

WinSCP is an FTP/SFTP client which also supports the older SCP protocol whose primary function is to securely transfer files between a user's computer and a server. It runs on every Windows operating system since Windows 95. On the positive side, it's completely free and has a graphical interface. On top of that, it's a very light-weight program that's fast and efficient, so you can leave it running in the background without eating up too many resources.

FileZilla Logo

FileZilla is a free, open-source file transfer client that works on all operating systems, with executable binaries available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS. FileZilla offers quite a bit in the way of automated features, such as the site manager which allows you to organize your connections and login information, scheduled bandwidth restrictions that will restrict or open your transfer rate based upon the time of day, and message logging to keep track of transfers and investigate errors.

Fetch Logo

Fetch is a Mac OS only, proprietary licensed FTP client which enjoyed brief popularity with the Macintosh community. It is still developed by its creator, Jim Matthews, who developed it as an employee at Dartmouth College. Eleven years later, Mr. Matthews won money on a television game-show, bought the source code and Fetch name, and established Fetch Softworks.

Cyberduck Logo

Cyberduck is an open source, free FTP client for Mac OS X. Like many other open source FTP clients, it offers multiple languages, graphical interface, and supports FTP/TLS, SFTP, and WebDAV protocols. Even more, it allows for Cloud Files and Amazon S3 browsing, which can be a huge time-saver for those that need them. Another interesting feature of Cyberduck is its bookmarking system, which users have reported to be excellent up until the latest release where the bookmark drawer was removed.
